Poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, born on March 6, 1806, is best known for her Sonnets from the Portuguese. “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.”

Barrett was often sick and took laudanum for pain. She married Robert Browning in secret and moved to Italy to escape her strict and controlling father.
She loved books and philosophy and believed in spiritualism.
(This portrait was included in A Selection of the Poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning published in 1872.)
