Pawnee Chief Big Wolf

Chief Big Wolf was a leader of the Pawnee people in the late 1800s, who fought to protect his people’s way of life. The Pawnee lived in what is now Nebraska and Kansas, farming and hunting buffalo.

But life was changing was changing during Big Wolf’s time. The U.S. government forced many Native American tribes onto reservations. The government also tried to change their way of life, forcing them to become farmers and give up their traditions.
Big Wolf believed his people should be free to live as they always had. In 1891, he traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with President Benjamin Harrison. He and other Pawnee leaders asked the government to let them keep their land and live as they wanted. But the government didn’t listen.
Even though Big Wolf didn’t win his fight, he never gave up. He continued to lead his people and is remembered as a strong and proud leader who stood up for the Pawnee.
