Sioux Chief Broken Arm

Times were changing for the Sioux people during the late 1800s, and Chief Broken Arm was forced to roll with the punches. The U.S. government wanted the Native tribes to live on reservations.

Broken Arm wanted peace but also wanted to protect his people. He believed in strong leadership and keeping Sioux traditions alive, and worked with other chiefs to find the best way forward.
Like many Sioux leaders, he faced hard choices. Some wanted to fight, while others thought making peace was better. Broken Arm knew both paths had risks. The buffalo, their main food source, was disappearing, and settlers were taking more land.
Broken Arm worked to help his people survive these changes. He knew the Sioux had to be strong and smart.
