Mary Garden was as famous for her scandals as her singing. Born in Scotland in 1874, she moved to America as a child, and later found fame in Paris, as an opera star.
Her bold, modern style shocked audiences. In roles like Thaïs, Salomé, and Louise, she brought sensuality and intensity to the stage. Critics were often divided, but Garden didn’t care. She performed on her own terms.
She had a fiery temper and fought with opera houses, fellow singers, and critics. She made sweeping changes and fired singers she didn’t like when she took over the Chicago Opera.
She gave blunt, dramatic interviews in retirement, and never lost her diva attitude.
