Actor E. H. Sothern

 

E.H. Sothern gained fame for his performances in Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Richard III, and The Merchant of Venice. However, his most celebrated role was Prince Karl, a romantic comedy that made him a star.

Sothern and Julia Marlowe formed one of the most famous theatrical partnerships of their time, performing together in Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra, among others. Their onstage chemistry translated into real life, and they married in 1911.

They toured extensively, drawing devoted audiences. As they aged, their performances became rarer, and Sothern eventually retired from the stage.

E.H. Sothern passed away in 1933.
