Winfield Scott in the War of 1812

An 1861 article in Harper’s New Monthly Magazine gave us a glimpse of the real Winfield Scott. “He was very tall and muscular, frank and generous in disposition, bold in courage and ardent in temper. He could speak, write, and fight.”

He served with valor in the War of 1812, and received a ball in both thighs. Scott served under General James Wilkinson but never trusted him, knowing of his intrigue with Spain and Aaron Burr in his Western plots.
