General Lew Wallace Meets Billy the Kid

General Lew Wallace, the author of Ben Hur, was governor of the New Mexico territory. He cut a deal with Billy the Kid in 1879 to pardon him if he kept his nose clean for a year, then quickly reneged on the deal.

That didn’t stop him from telling stories about the Kid. He told reporters that Billy was “forked lightning with a shooting tool.” The Kid said he never used a gunsight to take aim. “I just point my finger at what I shoot at, that’s all.”
He raised his hand and pointed a finger at Wallace as he said these words. “Bang! Bang!”
“He simply permitted his finger to rest along the barrel of his pistol,” said Wallace. “Then, instead of attempting to point the pistol at his mark, he pointed his forefinger at the target, pulling the trigger with his middle finger.”
